At least that’s our hope.
Holding on to what’s ours…
Above and Below:
The trip from Barterstown isn’t a good one as Walker (Michael Greyeyes) and Strand (Colman Domingo) aren’t exactly getting along. Walker has no use for bullshit and Strand thrives in the commodity. If not for Madison (Kim Dickens), one or the other would likely end up dead before getting to their destination. Which is..?
Strand leads them to a junkyard where there’s a manhole cover, which leads to a sewer pipe. He says he went this way to get to the dam, though what he says doesn’t make sense he left the dam in a Jaguar with Daniel (Ruben Blades). But I digress.
They get into the tunnels, wade thought a lot of shit, and eventually encounter zombies, one of which Madison has to dismember to clear the way. Strand admits at one point that he doesn’t really remember the way to dam, but they figure out the markings and they get to their destination—
Just in time to run into Daniel facing them down with a pistol.
Welcome to the Party:
Daniel is happy to see Madison but he’s ready to park a bullet in Strand’s head, because the last time he saw this lying bastard he left him to the dead. Madison prevents that from happening by saying Ofelia is with them at the ranch—oh, and we need help.
They meet with Lola (Lisandra Tena) and Efrain (Jesse Borrego) and explain that they want to trade skills and goods for water. Lola, however, isn’t having any of it and won’t trade for them—particularly when Efrain’s in her ear telling her not to deal at all because, in private moments with Daniel, he feels they should just drain the lake and give the water to the people, which you know means at some point this is exactly what this asshole will do since no one has put a bullet in his head for talking such shit.
Daniel knows they should make the deal. He knows it won’t be long before “the people” on the outside decide to overrun the dam, kill everyone, and try to keep the water for themselves. Lola can’t bring herself to make the deal, however: as Madison figures out if any of the outliers find out Lola has cut a deal with “the gringos” north of the border, they’ll do exactly what Daniel fears.
Daniel tries to talk sense into Lola, explaining that his daughter lives at the ranch and saving Madison’s people will save her. Lola thinks Ofelia should come live with them, but Daniel would prefer his daughter continues to think he is dead. With no one willing to make a move, one could say we find ourselves in a… Mexican standoff.
Strand is being Strand and he’s getting a feel for life at the dam. He plays dumb on Spanish so he can hear conversations and find out that Daniel calls him “The Snake” and tells people to be careful around him. Of course, once he knows the situation at the dam, he’s able to do his thing…
Walker is pissed ‘cause he’s come to realize that the deal they tried to cut with the dam isn’t working, so he gathers his shit and takes off, probably expecting to walk all the way back to the ranch. Madison figures she can take another run at Lola and fix this deal—
Strand is up on the dam watching a water truck getting ready to go out. Daniel comes over and tells him he doesn’t know what the hell he’s up to, but if it benefits them both, he’ll look the other way.
Madison can’t cut a deal and decides to leave. She finds Strand and tells them they need to leave, but he tells her to hold up—just long enough to watch the water truck blow up. People are coming towards the damn, Lola realizes they are in danger, and she puts people on the gate to protect them.
Later she speaks with Madison and Strand. She wants to know if they can have a certain number of guns and ammo, as determined by Daniel. Madison say if they can have 10,000 gallons of water in a spare truck they can be back in five days. Lola adds that she wants Ofelia to come with them. Madison agrees. Eventually they get the truck and water: Madison gets behind the wheel while Strand and Daniel shake for the fuck of it.
Later on the road Madison asks about how the truck blew up. The moment she starts shining her own she calls bullshit and he tells her that he tried something he saw in an old movie, not certain it was going to work. A moment or two later they come across Walker, who is, um, walking. They pick him up and the merry band heads back to the ranch.
