Here’s what went down in Episode 8 (titled “IV”) of Knightfall Season 1.

It’s A Scrag Fight To The Death In Navarre

Queen Elena of Catalonia (Claudia Bassols) is pissed that her son, Prince Lluis (Marco Franz) died while vacaying in Paris. As a result of this, when she hears king Philip (Ed Stoppard) has decided not to send his army to support his queen, takes Joan (Olivia Ross) captive and gives her an ultimatum: one of her children must die to make it all even.

After some time to mull it over, Joan offers up Isabella (Sabrina Bartlett). This is most likely because Isabella is all the way in Paris and protected by the king’s army. However, Elena is just happy to be killing someone and has no idea Joan has a different plan. Once Joan points out Isabella’s death will not make the grief of losing Lluis subside, Elena bursts into tears.  A hug-fest results and Joan takes advantage of the situation by stabbing her cousin and reclaiming Navarre.

Joan is vicious AF.

Afterwards, while chatting to her handmaiden, Sophie (Amelia Clarkson), Joan admits she is only going back to Paris now to get her daughter. They will return to Navarre and Joan will have an idyllic life. Sophie asks if this will include the father of Joan’s unborn child.

And now we know how Joan can have her pie and eat it too.

Of course, she has to make it back to Paris and out again without getting herself killed by her husband.

But, why would King Philip want to kill his wife?

Because, in Episode 8 of Knightfall, William De Nogaret (Julian Ovenden), has weaselled his way back into the palace and revealed to the king that he thinks Pope Boniface (Jim Carter) will shut down Philip’s rule now he has the Holy Grail in his hot little hands.

Oh, and his wife is shacking up with his Templar bestie, Landry (Tom Cullen).

Oh, snap!

Is it just me, or did this reveal feel like a Springer episode?

While the king says he doesn’t believe his wife and bestie could do this to him, he pays De Nogaret for the army he has gathered to defend the king against the Pope. He also decides to launch his own investigation into the Queen’s fidelity—or lack of it.

Parsifal Gets Dumped

The initiate who killed Parsifal in Episode 7 of Knightfall dumps his body and then tells Landry that Parsifal was planning to torture Roland ( Cengiz Dervis) to find out who “IV” was.

Landry insists a search party be sent out to find Parsifal. As a result of this, most of the Templar army is away when the Pope arrives…

Landry Makes The Wrong Decision

Since Landry reclaimed the Holy Grail in Episode 7 of Knightfall, he always insisted he would present it to the Pope. Before Boniface arrives, the Saracen, Rashid (Akin Gazi), and Landry’s mother, Anna (Gina McKee), insist Landry do what Godfrey (Sam Hazeldine) wanted and find a new hiding place for the Holy Grail. Rashid says the Pope will use the Grail as a means to start a new Crusade and a lot of people will be killed needlessly as a result.

Landry, against all their good advice, trusts the Pope implicitly and hands the Grail over to Boniface when he gets there. The Pope is underwhelmed by the appearance of the Grail, probably because it will look so out of place among all the Church’s riches.

Landry then asks Boniface what he plans to do now he has the Holy Grail.

The Pope says he will start a new Crusade.

WTF did Rashid and your mum tell you Landry?

Seriously, Landry *rolls eyes*

Then Landry sees that all of the Pope’s guards have numbered chain mail. With absolute confirmation now that the “IV” from the message intercepted from Roland was a member of the Pope’s army, and that it is likely the Pope played a part in Godfrey’s murder, Landry attacks.

It’s a shame most of his army isn’t present though.

Even still, Rashid offers the help of the Saracen and Landry can actually put up a decent fight.

At the end, when Rashid lays dying from battle wounds, he lets Landry in on a little secret, someone Landry thinks is dead isn’t really dead.

In walks Tancrede (Sam Merrells) and the crowd cheers.
