Here’s what went down in Episode 9 (titled “Fiat!”) of Knightfall Season 1.

King Philip and De Nogaret Plot

It takes King Philip (Ed Stoppard) mere seconds to trust William De Nogaret (Julian Ovenden) implicitly. So, already they are getting an army ready to fight the Templars.

Episode 8 of Knightfall had the king saying he needed proof of his wife’s infidelity. However, by Episode 9, Philip is ready to mess with Queen Joan’s (Olivia Ross) head when she returns from Navarre. While Joan doesn’t know Philip knows about who the real father of her baby is, she knows something is up because the king is not very good at being underhanded and discrete.

Isabella Makes More Dumb Decisions

Joan sends her handmaiden, Sophie (Amelia Clarkson), off to find Princess Isabella (Sabrina Bartlett), to tell her about their relocation plans. Isabella is decidedly pissed when Joan breaks the news, especially when Joan mentions she knows just how much of the plot to kill Prince Lluis (Marco Franz) involved Isabella.

The Princess leaves in a huff and decides to use De Nogaret’s peephole. It is then that she discovers Landry (Tom Cullen) is the father of Joan’s baby.

As a result of this, Isabella, having not learned from the Lluis debacle, makes another rash decision. This sees Sophie getting beaten up and Joan taken captive after the king reveals he knows everything about Joan’s plot to leave and who the father of Joan’s baby really is.

Nice work Isabella.

She obviously takes after her father when it comes to the dumb.

Landry Seeks help

Meanwhile, Landry has his own share of drama. He has decided that the Templar Grand Master, Jacques De Molay (Robert Pugh), will be Team Landry and fight against the Pope.

Oh, how naive Landry still is.

Not only does the Grand Master tell him he is overstepping the line when it comes to suggesting the Templars fight against the Church, he also reveals Pope Boniface (Jim Carter) is already there.

Seeing no other option, Landry allows his arrest so that Tancrede (Sam Merrells) can try to steal the Holy Grail back from the Pope while the court proceedings are going on. However, just when Tancrede seems ready to snatch the Grail, the female ninja assassin from an earlier episode of Knightfall turns up and grabs it out from under his nose.

Because, of course.

Also, the Grail is not what you think it is.

Once again, because, of course.

While all this is going on, Landry is charged with five of the nine great crimes against the Church. Gawain (Padraic Delaney) also turns up to spill the beans about the fact Landry has been shagging a married woman.

With all this stacked against him, Landry is found guilty of all charges and is sentenced to be excommunicated from the Church and to be burned at the stake.

Lucky for Landry, though, his mother, Anna (Gina McKee), is determined to get her son off the hook. While she manages to spill the beans on who Landry got pregnant–a fact that Pope Boniface will likely use against them all in later episodes of Knightfall–she also whispers something in Boniface’s ear that totally changes his mind.

Viewers of the show are not privy to what Anna said, though. Although, I have my suspicions…

Gawain Becomes a Tradie

While Landry may be safe from excommunication now, it doesn’t mean he is truly safe. At the end of Episode 9 of Knightfall, Gawain turns up with a sledgehammer and welcomes Landry into the world of being a cripple.
