The Templars Get A New Leader And Other Shenanigans
Landry (Tom Cullen) is now the new Templar Master. he’s not so sure he’s up for the job, but really doesn’t have a say in the matter it seems.
Episode 1 of Knightfall Season 1 saw Godfrey (Sam Hazeldine) murdered by highwaymen who obviously have a secret agenda. Episode 2 sees the Templars return to Parsifal’s (Bobby Schofield) farm to exhume Godfrey’s body. But, whoops, someone has already stolen him.
While the Templars are determined to find out who has stolen Godfrey’s body, Parsifal just wants to exact revenge on whoever killed his girlfriend. As you can imagine, he’s like a loose cannon, so when the Templars take him along to a monastery, it’s no surprise that Parsifal doesn’t listen to them and fucks everything up.
Even so, they still manage to find out the highwayman who killed Godfrey goes by the name Roland, so at least they have something to go by. Added to this, they eventually find the body of Godfrey and the Templars reclaim him but not before Parsifal messes things up some more. At the end of all this, they actual ask him to sign up to become a Templar Knight and I am wondering what sort of drugs they are smoking.
While King Philip (Ed Stoppard) is telling Landry that they will find and avenge Godfrey’s murderer, Landry is agreeing to meet with Philip’s wife afterwards so they can “discuss” things.
Pope Badass VIII Arrives
While all this is going on, Pope Boniface (Jim Carter) arrives in town. Not only does he get to check out the cool blue stone they found in Episode 1 of Knightfall, but he gets to be involved in the squabbles involving who Princess Isabella (Sabrina Bartlett) should marry. Let’s break it all down:
- Isabella wants to marry Prince Lluis of Catalonia for love
- Queen Joan wants the same thing
- The king really doesn’t care
- William De Nogaret (Julian Ovenden) wants Isabella to marry into English Royalty
- The Pope is undecided even though Joan has a quiet chat with him and De Nogaret accuses him of siding with Catalonia for his own gain.
Regardless of how the cards fall, there is going to be one pissed off prince to contend with after a decision is made.
And that pissed off prince is England after the Pope receives word from God that Isabella should marry Prince Lluis.
De Nogaret Plots
William De Nogaret seems to have his finger in every pie he can lay his hands on. He also seems to have illusions of grandeur.
As a result of this, he is a very dangerous man, I suspect.
After De Nogaret accuses the Pope of favouring Catalonia, he decides to take matters into his own hands and sends his own personal assassin who killed the Christian in Episode 1 of Knightfall and caused so much grief for the Jews.
This time De Nogaret wants him to kill the Pope. The assassin is not so sure about this but after De Nogaret offers him much wealth, decides to do it.
However, the Pope evades death and sends De Nogaret the head of his assassin. Because the Pope is badass AF.
De Nogaret isn’t overly concerned though and accuses the Pope of being a danger to king and country. He then goes on to sweet talk Isabella and tells her that regardless of who she marries, he will make sure she is the most powerful woman in France. See what I said about illusions of grandeur?
Isabella has her own confession to make as well. She once fantasied about marrying De Nogaret and suddenly I am deciding I am not Team Isabella. De Nogaret gets an obvious boner after hearing this news because, hey, it’s bleeding obvious he fancies her as well.
As well as all of this, De Nogaret decides the Templars are up to something and tries to rally Gawain (Padraic Delaney) to his cause since not only is Gawain the brunt of Skyrim jokes, but Landry demoted him from knight to initiate teacher. De Nogaret tells the injured knight that he knows a doctor who can fix his knee. Gawain is tempted and offers up that the Templars are on a search for the Holy Grail.
The Holy Grail Clue #2: Guts Is The Key To Everything
While the Templar Knights are ready to turn over every stone in order to find out more about the Holy Grail, they draw the line at cutting open Godfrey like the Pope suggests. However, the holy man is very persuasive and they end up doing it anyway.
This is a good thing because Godfrey was hiding a key inside his body and viewers will have to wait until Episode 3 of Knightfall to find out what the key will open.
