SEASON FINALE: The Walking Dead Season 3 Recap – Episode 16: Welcome to the Tombs

The Governor's (David Morrissey) good eye in episode 16 of AMC's The Walking Dead

Welcome to the Tombs

And so we reach the season finale of AMC’s The Walking Dead. So what did I think of episode 16, entitled, Welcome to the Tombs? Honestly? I loved it – right up until the last few minutes – but I’ll get to that later. So sit back and enjoy the ride…

We start episode 16 with the Governor (David Morrissey) torturing someone who we assume is Andrea (Laurie Holden). Except it’s Milton (Dallas Roberts). TheGov. is pissy that Milton grew a spine and killed some biters. The line of the episode occurs early on with the Governor spouting:

“In this life now, you kill or you die…or you die and you kill.”

So Milton must kill Andrea in order to stay in the Governor’s good favour. ExceptMilton has finally taken the moral high ground and doesn’t care any more. Instead, he turns on the Governor with a knife. Of course, it’s too earlier in the season finale for the Governor to die, so it’s poor Milton that gets stuck like a pig. The Governor leaves a dying Milton locked in the room with Andrea.

One way or another Milton will kill her. Lucky he dropped a pair of pliers behindAndrea’s chair that the Gov. didn’t see…

Next we find the prison gang packing up. Looks like they decided to leave the prison rather than stay and fight – smart move. Carl (Chandler Riggs) is pissy with his dad though. That kid really is messed up if he’d prefer to stay and fight.

Rick (Andrew Grimes) and Michonne (Danai Gurira) sort things out in Episode 16 of AMC's The Walking Dead

Rick (Andrew Lincoln) andMichonne (Danai Gurira)settle their score – which doesn’t bode well. Everyone knows that a settled score in a finale means certain death…this is why I worry about the survival rate of Maggie (Lauren Cohan) and Glenn (Steven .

The Gov. has left Milton andAndrea up to their own devices and is now riling up his army of misfits. It’s now that Tyreese (Chad Coleman) and his sister, Sasha (Sonequa Martin-Green), decide to pick Team Prison. They’re subtle about it though, telling theGov. that they’d rather fight biters than humans. The Governor agrees to let them stay behind and defend the weak. At least Tyreese and Sasha are smart enough to realise their lives are now forfeit.

The Governor (David Morrissey) arrives at the Prison in episode 16 of AMC's The Walking Dead

And, finally, the show is on the road! The Governor arrives at the prison and the death tally can officially start. Although, do zombies count towards the 27? Once the undead are made re-dead, the Governator enters the prison.

You can hear a pin drop.

No one is home.

This doesn’t stop the Gov. from making a mess. In the midst of it all, he finds Hershel’s (Scott Wilson) bible:

To be honest though, the verse above the highlighted one is just as ominous…

Milton is still alive. Lucky, because he can tell Andrea about the pliers before he turns. Of course, she pushes them away rather than picks them up with her feet.

Oh no, did Milton just die?

Now we’re back at the prison and the Gov. is still searching for Rick and the gang.

What’s that noise?

Andrea (Laurie Holden) uses her feet in Episode 16 of AMC's The Walking Dead

Crap! Back to Andrea again.Milton sure does seem dead. How long before he turns? Andrea gets handy (but with her feet) and manages to finally pick up the pliers. Yay!

Double Yay! Milton was just tricking us and is still live. The pair chat and Andrea admits that she just wanted to save everyone, that’s why she never killed the Governor, she thought she could fix him as well as the world.

Oh golly, now we’re back at the prison again – and it’s a trap. Rick has been handy with his bag of flares again and it’s goes off like a frog in a sock in there.

Ah, so the prison gang didn’t leave. Look, there’s Glenn and Maggie in full riot gear and they’re firing at the Governator like there’s no tomorrow! As a result the he retreats, but for how long?

Carl (Chandler Riggs) gets tough in Episode 6 of AMC's The Walking Dead

Meanwhile, on the outskirts of theprison, the weak are also being looked after – ah, so that’s whyCarl was pissy. As a child, he is considered one of the weak and in need of protection. But wait, what’s that running towards them? Oh no, it’s a way for Carl to prove he’s a big kid now. So we say bye-bye to one of the Woodbury gang before we get to even know them. It’s a shame he was surrendering there Carl…

So Rick, Michonne, Daryl (Norman Reedus) and Carol (Melissa McBride) were also holed up in the prison. They all agree they want to kill the Governator. Hell, this is nerve-wracking! They re-group and Rick has to have a little chat to Carl about killing people.

The Governor may be retreating – or so his army think. Instead he pulls them all over and demands to know why they are returning to Woodbury. The army turn on him and say the same thing as Tyreese and Sasha – they are happy to kill biters, but draw the line at people.

Can anyone say ‘here, have some kool-aid’? Yep, I’m pretty sure the Governor’s real name is actually David Koresh. He guns down his army – his typical response to people who disagree with him.  Allen (Daniel Thomas May) from the Tyreese crew attempts to bring the Gov. down. He doesn’t last long. Martinez (Jose Pablo Cantillo) andBowman (Travis Love) are the only survivors. There is a chance for the bromance to bloom between Martinez and Daryl still.

But wait, is that body covered by another body really dead? It seems Karen (Melissa Ponzio) has survived!

It’s been awhile since we’ve checked on Andrea – that can’t be good, can it? Nope.Milton is re-animating!

Damn it! We’re back to the prison gang! Rick, Michonne andDaryl decide they are thebaddest bad arses in the village and leave to find theGovernor. On the road they find the Governator’s genocide.Except, it’s gotten worse. A lot of the dead have reanimated and are now feasting on the others. Rickand the bad arses have to clean house. In the process they findKaren.

And now it’s back to Milton the monster! Andrea is working double time to free herself beforeMilton attacks. Does she escape?

Damn! It’s back to Rick and the bad arses. They’re heading  toWoodbury. Oh dear, that has to be bad, doesn’t it? Instead, they avoid the Governor and findTyreese and Sasha defending the fort. There is a bit of confusion, but luckily Carl isn’t there, so no one gets killed. Rick surrenders to Tyreese and they go looking for Andrea.

Quick hurry guys! You need to save her from Milton!

Uh-oh. It’s a blood puddle. That’s bad.

Milton is dead (again) and Andrea looks okay. But why does she look so sad. Fuck! She’s bitten! Michonne is gutted. Rick gives Andrea a gun and everyone (except Michonne) leave the room.

R.I.P Andrea.

Everyone returns to the prison. There is a brief moment here where I wonder if Rickand his bad arses are returning to a bloodbath since we haven’t seen the Governor for a while. And then there is a zombie wandering around the field that looks a little like Caroland I am starting to really panic now. I am totally expecting everyone to be dead!

Then everyone comes out of the prison – they are safe.

And this is where I stop liking this episode.

Rick has bought all the Woodbury survivors with him (which is not why I am annoyed with the end), he leads them inside the prison.

Yeah, AMC decide to drag the Governator into Season 4. Not happy AMC!

And the 27 dead? I was right – most of them were zombies and the result of theGovernator going nuts, not main characters at all…I guess I should be happy Glennand Maggie are still alive.
