The Walking Dead Season 3 Recap – Episode 13: Arrow on the Doorpost

The Governor (David Morrissey) and Rick (Andrew Lincoln) sit down for a chat in Episode 13 of AMC's The Walking Dead

Arrow on the Doorpost

Well, wasn’t episode 13 of AMC’s The Walking Dead just as delicious as episode 12? In a nutshell, it boiled down to nothing more that two kids standing in the snow, trying to piss further than the other. But, boy oh boy, wasn’t the execution just fantastic?!

We start with Andrea (Laurie Holden) organizing a hook up between the Governor (David Morrissey) and Rick (Andrew Lincoln). Both men bring along their crew –Rick brings Daryl Dixon (Norman Reedus) and Hershel (Scott Wilson), the Gov.brings Milton (Dallas Roberts) and Martinez (Jose Pablo Cantillo) – oh, and forgets to tell Andrea that he’d left already. If Andrea hasn’t worked out by the end of this episode that the Governor is just using her like the pawn she is, than she deserves whatever the bastard dishes up to her!

Once she’s ousted from the men’s club, she has a heart to heart with Hershel(and did anyone else miss Dale (Jeffrey DeMunn) to pieces during this scene?) and I suspect she may very well use her pawn status against the Governor next week – or I hope so anyway. I still like to think Andrea is a good person who just makes stupid choices. She needs to learn to stop sucking up to the men in power!

So Rick and the Gov. sit down for a chat. We learn very early on in this conversation that the Governor has a concealed weapon. The rest of the episode is spent in fear of that weapon being whipped out. Nice work on building paranoia AMC, nice work. Oh course, the Governor’s concealed weapon matches the one duct taped to Hershel’s leg just nicely…

While most of this episode revolves around this conversation, what it really boils down to is whether Rick realises that the Gov. will go to war regardless. Rick’s plan is to divide up the land into territories. Needless to say, the Gov. doesn’t go for this idea. Although, he does claim he will forget everything that has happened between the two tribes if Rickhands over Michonne (Danai Gurira).

I’m pretty sure Rick won’t do that…

Meanwhile, outside, Daryl and Martinez are having their own pissing contest – in the form of a ‘look, my weapon is bigger than yours and see how good it kills zombies‘ fest. While the pair start off as enemies, there is a certain comradery by the end. Ditto betweenHershel and Milton.

While last episode revolved around three characters, episode 13 expands a little and allows us to see what is happening back at the prison. And it seems that Merle (Michael Rooker) wants to go and kill the Governor on his own. Everyone else won’t let him. What kind of dumb-arsed fools are they? Why are people reluctant to take out theGovernor? We all know he’s crazy – bat-shit and certifiably so! I think Michonne would have gone with Merle too, if he was more careful about what he’d said about Andrea. After all, EVERYONE knows Michonne has a girl crush on her!

In the midst of all this war-talk, Glenn (Steven Yeun) and Maggie (Lauren Cohen)make up and make whoopee something fierce! Way to go guys 😀

And then it’s back to the Governor and Rick. The negotiations are over, the head-messing is done with (man, can’t the Gov. can spin some shit?) and it is time for the two men to break up camp and head back to their own quarters. While the audience know how loopy the Gov. is, it’s nice to finally see how much Rick understands the threat theGovernor imposes on them.

So an all out war is imminent.

Here’s my predictions for who will not survive to Season 4:

  • Beth Greene (Emily Kinney)
  • Hershel Green (and his role of advisor will be filled by Tyreese)
  • Caesar Martinez (although it will spoil the bromance going on with him and Daryl)
  • Allen (Daniel Thomas May) from the Tyreese crew
  • Ben (Tyler Chase) also from the Tyreese crew
  • Andrea or Merle Dixon – not sure which one, but I am fairly certain one of them will bite a bullet
  • Milton Mamet (after he jumps ship and redeems himself)

While I couldn’t find the recurring zombie man in this episode, thanks to aston001, there was a recurring zombie WOMAN spotted!

What are your predictions for the end of Season 3 of AMC’s The Walking Dead?
