So what in the hell sort of name is ‘A‘ anyway?
And so starts the beginning of the end for Episode 16 of AMC’s The Walking Dead…
First off we find Rick (Andrew Lincoln), Michonne (Danai Gurira) and Carl (Chandler Riggs) checking snares. There’s still that feeling of happy families going on, so when I hear the screaming, I kind of expect it. Except this is completely decoy screams. Turns out some random human is being attacked by walkers. There is nothing Rick’s group can do, so they head away from the mess.
Oh, and before I forget, this episode is bought to you by Rick’s flashbacks. Yep, his crazy is back, except, this time, it’s Hershel (Scott Wilson) who is his moral compass. All of the flashbacks revolve around Rick and Hershel and the happiness that was farming life back at Old MacPrison’s Farm. Oh, and we have a bit of a looksee at psycho Carl again too…
And then we’re back on track again. Now it’s night time and Rick and Michonne are chatting around a fire.
Apparently it’s nothing. But we all know it’s totally SOMETHING.
But Rick and Michonne go back to talking about Terminus and there are the first hints that maybe they think it is the new Woodbury.
This lulls us all back into a false sense of security so that Joe (Jeff Kober) and his fucked up redneck crew can show up and point a gun at Rick’s head and a paedophile at his son!
Yeah, seems they finally tracked him down. Except we can’t see Daryl (Norman Reedus), so we have no idea if he’s okay or not. Oh wait, there he is, sacrificing himself for Rick. Gets the shit kicked out of him too before Rick manages to disarm Joe. There is a lot of fighting in the dark after that until Rick rips out Joe’s jugular WITH HIS TEETH. Then he guts the guy who is trying to rape Carl.
Yeah, totally get how we are getting crazy flashbacks now…
But, then there is no one left except Rick’s crew. Michonne goes all mummy on Carl and comforts him as he lays in the back of the car. Rick and Daryl discuss what level of crazy you have to maintain to function after the zombie apocalypse hits. Rick declares Daryl is his bro and things are starting to look okay again.
The very next day they come across a Terminus sign on the ground and Rick says the first smart thing any of them have ever said about Terminus by suggesting they all head into the woods to check out Terminus first. I’m fairly certain Rick would have suggested this anyway, but after the incident with Joe’s gang, it’s pretty much a sure bet.
While they are split up, Michonne tells Carl all about how her son died and why her husband and his mate ended up as her walker puppies. It appears she is trying to help Carl from going back to his psycho days. But really, they all need to be the perfect blend of bad arse and bat shit crazy now don’t they?
The heading into the woods is short lived and they all meet back to hide a bag of weapons and jump the fence leading into Terminus.
Now, this section of the episode seems really rushed to me. Shouldn’t they sit back for twenty four hours and really see what’s going down? Also, there seems to be some possible time gaps, so maybe they did and we won’t find out what they did with those missing moments until Season 5? Either way, they are suddenly storming into the first room they come across.
And this is where we meet Gareth (Andrew J. West) for the first time. I keep hearing this name mentioned as the could be, but might not be super baddie for Season 5. He’s all ‘look at me, I’m not the Governor because I’m younger than him and I still have both my eyes.‘ Yeah, don’t trust him one little bit. Too smarmy, too full of bullshit.
Seems Rick doesn’t trust him either because when Mary (Denise Crosby) offers them a plate of meat (and I haven’t seen anyone eat any yet. So, technically, if the cannibal theory is correct, none of the Rick crew have dined on human flesh yet – and, no, Joe’s jugular doesn’t count!), he goes all gung ho and pulls his gun on the guy carrying Glenn’s (Steven Yeun) watch – you know, the one Hershel gave him.
[insert annoying flashback here]
Oh yeah, shit is going down now. As Rick looks around we confirm that, yes, we did actually see someone wearing Glenn’s riot gear earlier and, whoa, there was a reason Maggie (Lauren Cohan) was wearing Daryl’s poncho, it’s so Rick would recognise it when someone else was wearing it!
So there’s a bit of a stand off and Gareth is trying to talk everyone down except Rick won’t listen and now they are all running for their lives.
Except those bloody snipers are actually aiming for everyone’s feet and practically – actually – herding them into wherever it is this group wants them to go.
And this is where the significance of the title kicks in .
Everything marked ‘A’ is where Rick and his crew are lead to. First it’s a door. Hello, there’s some de-fleshed carcasses lying around before it, but let’s just look away shall we? Is that people calling for help? Yeah, just disregard that folks… And then they’re in a shrine with candles and crazy talk on the walls (Never Again. Never Trust. We First, Always) and names on the floors.
Yep, hello, Terminus is a cannibal camp for sure!
Next they’re out of that room and running for their lives again. So, of course, it’s exactly to where Gareth wants them to be.
But, hang on, is there some sort of speaking without uttering words going on between Rick and Carl? And is that some more eye talking going on that includes Daryl and Michonne too? It seems there might be some sort of a plan being hatched…
And that’s how Rick, Michonne, Daryl and Carl, end up in a train cart with Glenn, Maggie and their group.
Which leads us to a break from The Walking Dead tradition – the season finale cliff hanger! Yep, normally it’s reserved for the mid-season finale, but not this time.
Now we have to wait until October to find out how the fuck Rick is gonna get them the hell out of Terminus!
