The Walking Dead Season 5 Recap – Episode 14: Spend

Glenn (Steven Yeun) stars in EPisode 14 (entitled Spend) Season 5 of AMC's The Walking Dead

The shock of Episode 14 (entitled Spend) Season 5 of AMC’s The Walking Deadhas finally subsided a little, so here is what happened:

  • This whole episode really seemed to focus on how Rick’s (Andrew Lincoln) group are no longer functioning humans like they were before the apocalypse. Their severe PTSD doesn’t allow for them to cope with playing at being happy communities at all. Previously we saw them assimilate and try to make themselves like they used to be before, now they are just so far beyond hurt and damaged that they live by their own rules – even when they are trying to fit in. All of them are trying to cope as best they can. Some are quite successful at it, covering their hurt by helping, providing, being human as best they can or by doing what they have always done best (Maggie, Glenn, Noah). Others are feral’s simmering away under the surface (Rick, Daryl, Carol). EvenEugene (Josh McDermitt) is trying to be normal by sticking to his annoying ways!
  • Noah (Tyler James Williams) wants to be an architect. After seeing his home fall and his family dead, it is completely understandable his PTSD comes out in this form. Deanna’s (Tovah Feldshuh) husband, Reg (Steve Coulter), is happy to help Noah fulfill this dream.

Abraham (Michael Cudlitz) stars in EPisode 14 (entitled Spend) Season 5 of AMC's The Walking Dead

  • Abraham (Michael Cudlitz) comes into his own when he helps defendAlexandria members from the walkers. It seems this place may be a ‘safe haven’ but if a walker arrives, don’t expect anyone to have your back! Of course, having your back is what Rick’s group does best. It looks like Alexandria are going to have to harden the fuck up and learn this lesson well.
  • Rick gets a visit from Jessie’s (Alexandra Breckenridge) husband, Pete (Corey Brill). Turns out he’s a drunk as well as a doctor.
  • Speaking of Jessie, Carol (Melissa McBride) is getting hassled by Jessie’s son, the one she threatened within an inch of his life last week. Seems he wants more cookies and won’t take no for an answer. Carol is a hard arse but you can see her melting around the edges when the boy agrees to steal chocolate for her so she can teach him how to make them. In the process she discovers Jessie’s husband is a wife beater and you just know Carol is going to want to take him for a walk to look at some flowers pretty damn soon! Oh, and AMC, you probably should have put this whole scene in last week – it would have made more sense for Rick to kiss Jessie AFTER he found out what a shit her husband was.

  • The supply run. Oh, the supply run. There is so much to say about this. Firstly, Eugene doesn’t want to go with Glenn (Steven Yeun), Noah, Tara (Alana Masterson), Aiden (Daniel Bonjour) and Nicholas (Michael Traynor) to collect the parts he knows about that will help fix the solar system in Alexandria. I want to know if anyone asked Eugene if he actually knew how to install the parts or was he just playing at immunity again? Of course Tara tells him to grow a set of balls and Eugene is officially on the supply run list.
  • So we see Aiden being a little more gracious and accepting of Glenn’s authority on what it’s like to live in the new walker world, which is nice. Except it seems old habits die hard and when there is an incident in the solar supplies warehouse, both Aiden and Nicholas turn out to be the weakest link.
  • Which really sucks because good people get hurt as a result of their stupidity.
  • So, to make a long story short, Aiden doesn’t listen when Glenn tells him to stop shooting at a walker with a live grenade. This means a big explosion, more walkers and plenty of shit hitting the fan.
  • Tara gets badly injured and Aiden gets thrown back into sharp pointy things. Even though they think he is dead, he turns out to be alive and in the process of trying to rescue him, you start to realise just how broad the gap is between how Rick’s group survived and how the cushy world of Alexandria has made that group survive. Remember how I mentioned earlier how they tend to just retreat when walkers threaten, leaving whoever behind? Yeah, that’s what happens to Aiden.
  • But wait, it gets worse. A whole lot worse.
  • Eugene is holed up in a safe room with Tara who has a severe head injury. Guess her words to him earlier about manning up finally sink in because Eugene grows a set and escapes with Tara, taking her back to the van the group arrived in.
  • Then the big bad happens.
  • We are left with Glenn, Noah and Nicholas inside the facility. Nicholas is freaking the fuck out and causing bad decisions to be made. Like this:

Glenn (Steven Yeun), Noah (Tyler James Williams) and Nicholas get stuck in the revolving doors of death in Episode 14 (entitled Spend) Season 5 of AMC's The Walking Dead

  • So Glenn and Noah are calm and try to work out how to get out of the situation because – of course – their guns are out of ammo and Nicholas is the one with the ammo. Thankfully Eugene has managed to lure half of the walkers away from the door now and there is just the conundrum of how to get out for the trio. Glenn wants to break out the window but Nicholas panics and manages to force his way out of revolving doors and we are left with this:

Noah (Tyler James Williams) dies in Episode 14 (entitled Spend) Season 5 of AMC's The Walking Dead

  • RIP Noah.
  • Seriously, I just wanted to kick Nicholas in the ovaries when this happened. How dare his panic cause the death of someone who doesn’t deserve it!
  • Now Nicholas is free and on the run, giving no shit whatsoever about Glenn and I am crying and throwing things at the screen. Then Eugene appears and Nicholas is telling him that no one survived. Bam! Glenn arrives just in time to punch the crap out of Nick. But does Glenn kill Nicholas? Oh no, instead he throws him in the back of the van and I am that livid I am hoping Tara dies and rips Nick’s stupid face off! Although, in hindsight, Glenn was right to haul Nick’s arse back to Alexandria because at least there will be a witness left from their team to bear witness to what happened.
  • And even more so when this happens:
  • Father Gabriel (Seth Gilliam) is a snitch. Yep, he goes to Deanna and calls Rick’s group on being all sorts of levels of Satan. Funny how he doesn’t fess up to what he did to his parishioners seeking shelter at the start of the apocalypse… and totally lucky that Maggie (Lauren Cohen) overheard the whole thing. Please, please, pleaseAMC, let Carol deal with this…
